Women Who Drink Two Or More Glasses Of Wine Per Day Can Increase Risk Of Potentially Fatal Heart Problem

Wasn’t it just a short time ago that we were told a few glasses of wine was good for us.  Now, according to the UK Telegraph, “Previous studies on the link between alcohol and irregular heart beats have been inconclusive.

This study looked at 34,715 women, all over the age of 45, and followed their drinking habits and general health for an average of almost 13 years.

None of the women suffered from an irregular heart beat at the start of the study, but by the end there were 653 new cases.

The women were split into four groups -teetotallers, those who drank up to one drink a day, those who drank up to two and those who regularly drank two or more alcoholic drinks a day.

The study found that women in the first three groups were not at an increased risk of suffering from atrial fibrillation.

But those whose regular intake involved two or more alcoholic drinks a day were up to 60 per cent more likely to develop the heart condition, the findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) show.

Dr David Conen, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School, who led the study said: “Alcohol consumption of up to 2 drinks per day was not associated with an increased risk of incident atrial fibrillation among initially healthy, middle-aged women. In contrast, the small group of women who consumed 2 or more alcoholic beverages per day had a 1.6-fold greater risk for atrial fibrillation relative to nondrinking women.”

  1. CJ says:

Yes, you’re absolutely right and this and the previous post provide a clear indication of why more and more people simply say, “Screw you,” when each new piece of wisdom is spewed out by the medical profession.

The studies are usually biased and flawed simply because they look at the matter under scrutiny in isolation – for instance, WHY are the women in question drinking more? Maybe they are married? or not married? or have green hair? Who knows?

What a lot of bullshit these people waste our money on!
